Planting and Growing Tips:- Planting Time: For the best results, plant California Garlic in the fall before the first frost. Garlic needs a cold period for the bulbs to develop properly, so fall planting will ensure a strong harvest in the summer.
- Soil Requirements: Garlic prefers loose, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH of 6.0-7.0. Add organic compost to enrich the soil and improve drainage.
- Spacing: Space garlic cloves 4-6 inches apart and plant them about 2 inches deep with the pointed end facing up. Space rows about 12 inches apart.
- Watering: Water regularly but avoid over-watering, as garlic doesn't like soggy soil. Reduce watering as the leaves begin to dry out, signaling that the bulbs are ready for harvest.
- Harvesting: Garlic is typically ready to harvest in late spring or early summer when the leaves begin to yellow and dry out. Carefully dig up the bulbs, brush off the soil, and allow them to cure in a dry, cool area for a few weeks.
Uses for California Garlic:- Cooking: Add fresh garlic to any dish for a burst of flavor. It's perfect for soups, sauces, pastas, roasted vegetables, and more.
- Roasting: Roasting California Garlic brings out its rich, sweet flavor. Simply roast whole bulbs and spread the soft, roasted cloves on bread or mix them into mashed potatoes.
- Preserving: California Garlic is great for pickling, fermenting, or making garlic-infused oils. It can be stored for months when cured properly.
- Garlic Butter: Make your own homemade garlic butter by combining roasted or fresh garlic with butter and seasonings. Perfect for bread, steaks, or vegetables.

Growing Garlic: When growing garlic the soil needs to be deeply worked and heavily amended with compost or manure. A neutral pH is recommend for growing the biggest and healthiest garlic bulbs. When using fertilizer use a low-nitrogen feed in the fall such as bone meal because that's when you want root growth, not leaf development then in the spring use a higher nitrogen fertilizer. Garlic grow best in a sunny spot on a slightly raised bed which keeps the garlic roots well drained, which they much prefer. As the bulbs mature having to much moisture in the soil can mean the loss of the crop. When planting break the bulb into individual cloves and push gently into the soil with the pointed-end up and blunt end down. Space the cloves about 6 to 8 inches apart and plant just deep enough that the top of the clove is barely covered. Make up the required depth by using a good mulch like hay or straw placing it loosely to a depth of several inches. The mulch will help to prevent frost heave and keep down weeds as garlic competes poorly against weeds, even a few weeds can stunt the garlic plants. In the early spring when the shoots start growing add a side dressing of compost.
Harvesting:
Harvest in early to mid summer when the outer leaves begin to die back.
The green leaf represents a layer of wrapper on the cured bulb so it's
good to harvest when the bulb still has four or five green leaves left. Store the bulbs where they have good ventilation and low-humidity during the curing process.
