It's best to plant garlic in the fall or early winter. Garlic grows best in full sun in a fertile loose soil with good drainage. In addition to adding compost to the planting bed, fertilize twice more with nitrogen as garlic is a nitrogen hog. Cover the garlic plot with a 3-inch layer of straw, grass clippings or
other organic mulch. This will protect the growing shoots from the
coming frost and freeze.
